Horses as pets

PostAuthor: airoyal » Thu Dec 15, 2011 6:25 pm

Maybe it could result into a dead thread, but anyhow here's my Q.
I was always fascinated by horses (and dogs/cat/ squirrel/monkey/ducks/geese/pigeons/goat/cow - had them as pets sometime or other (yes pets) ).
Had a strong desire for keeping a horse as pet. but could not get any knowledgeable person to guide me.
My Qs are:
1. Are they difficult as pets (mood swings, eating habits) ?
2. Are they expensive to maintain as regards to medicine, upkeep ? (not food, its plenty here)
3. Are they highly prone to diseases (like goats) ?
4 Is it necessary to groom them everyday ?
5. Do they forget their training easily ?

Would be nice if someone could chip-in
thanks

what city do you live in?

I am of the belief that everything is easy if you are determined to learn and apply.

AFAIK, in terms of feeding - they are as easy to maintain as a cow would be, but in contrast, they would need daily exercise (training if possible), and grooming, if exercise is not provided, they can turn stressed which gives way to sickness. Interaction with humans or their owners would also be crucial as its an intelligent animal.

A local breed (Manipuri Pony or the bigger Madwari / Kathiwari) would be more hardy than a slightly more demanding Thoroughbred.
