.318 Westley Richards or .404 Jeffery

PostAuthor: miroflex » Sun May 12, 2013 2:12 pm

Hi all,

I have been searching for old rifles for myself and my wife. Among the weapons I am considering are a .318 Westley Richards or a .404 Jeffery. The former calibre is included in the Director General of Foreign Trade's list of calibres whose import by dealers is permissible. The latter is not. Would members who have owned any of these rifles like to advise me on their merits and demerits.

Regards.

We (My Father and I) had a Westley Richard .318 inherited from my Grandfather. It is an obsolete calibre. Cartridges are almost impossible to find. We sold the gun to a friend, who opted to use .315 cartridges in it!

I'm talking of some 25 years back. If you want, I can provide you the number of the friend who bought it (Kanpur based). You could obtain further information from him, or if you are interested in buying, he in selling (if he still has it, or something of it is still existing :) ), you could try.

Hi Sitar,

Thank you very much for your advice. I have been considering .375 magnum and .240 Apex rifles also. While cartridges for the former, though expensive, are available, ammunition for the latter is not. Gun Geek had very kindly offered to put me in touch with someone who owns a .275 magnum, we have not been able to progress further. Please do let me know if you hear of any rifle in .375 Holland and Holland Magnum going for a reasonable price.

Regards.

The .318 Westley Richards is a good calibre. A character named Vikram Singh had even shot an Elephant with it ( Pre 71 days ) when it was allowed by pumping three rounds in it.

Three more were pumped with a Winchester .270

It is there for sale but the asking price might be unreasonable.

hi, I had a 318 westley richards and shot plenty of game with it ,it comes with 180 and 250 grs bullets and is obselete at present. For heavens sake DO NOT ATTEMPT to use .315 ctgs in the 318 as the bullet diametre of 318 is 0.330 and that of .315 is 0.323 of an inch. :punish:

Hello Shafath,

I may be able to get cartridges for the .318, Kynoch have started loading these cartridges again.

What do you think of the rifle and cartridge vis a vis the IOF .30-06?

A 30-06 is much superior to a .318.

If anyone does shoot a .315 cartridge in a .318, not only it is dangerous but the bullet will pass loose through the barrel and end up being a higly inaccurate shot.

No use to shoot .315 ammo in a fine English rifle at all.

yes Kynoch do make this ammo. And it can be imported by a gun dealer licensed to import rifle cartridges.

Hi, the difference between a 318 and a 30 06 is like chalk and cheese. The 318 is in a different class and much better than a 30 06. Remember, the 30 06 was basically designed as a war weapon in 1903, whereas the 318 was designed for hunting and it was very popular in Africa and India as a medium calibre. Its 180 grain bullet was extremly flat shooting and therefore it was called 318 ACCELERATED EXPRESS. Renowned elephant hunter Southerland used a 318 with 250 grains solid bullet on elephants and had a 577 nitro Westley Richards for a backup. In case you can get fresh ammo, go in for the 318, it will be a lifetime of pleasure.

Thats great info! I had no idea about this, as trajectory data is not usually available in gun books.
