raj

i dont have much knowledge but can tell u somthing

what is meaning of 12 gauge

shotguns are usually measured by "gauge," which equals the number of lead spheres, of the same internal diameter of the barrel, which equal one pound. Thus, a 10-gauge shotgun has a larger-diameter barrel than a 12-gauge shotgun, which has a larger-diameter barrel than a 20-gauge shotgun, and so forth.

so in 12 gauge you can use any size of projectiles but they should not exceed 1 oz in weight.

am i correct mods please clarify.

i think i have messed up??

In India IOF make KF brand shotgun shells.

These days they make the following products.

KF Special 30g ( 1 1/16 Oz ) load in 65 mm paper or plastic hull from no. 1 to 9

KF Astram in plastic shell 32 g ( 1 1/8 Oz ) in 70 mm hull also no. 1 to 9.

SHOT SIZES

No. of shot to the ounce.

1 - 100
2- 112
3 - 140
4-170
4 1/2 - 200
5- 220
5 1/2 - 240
6-270
6 1/2 - 300
7 - 340
7 1/2 - 400
8 - 450
9 - 580
9 1/2 - 630
10 - 850
11- 1130
12 - 1500
Dust - as per shot weight

BIGGER SHOTS AND BUCK SHOTS

LG - 6
MG - 7
SG - 8
Special SG - 11
SSG-15
SSSG - 20
SSSSG- 25
SSSSSG or also AAAA - 30 ( .22 round shot )
AAA- 35
AA - 40
A - 50
BBB - 60
BB - 70 ( This is the 4.2 mm shot )
B - 80

The Shaktiman Express 4.8 mm is a BBBB pellet of diameter .18 inch approx.

Such a pellet would be approx 55 to the ounce.

In a load of 1 1/8 ounce or 32 grams in a 70 mm Shaktiman shell there would be about 58 to 60 pellets.

However the quality of primer and powder in Shaktiman cartridges leaves much to be dezired.

I do not recomment the use of Shaktiman or KF BB cartridges as their pattern density is very poor.

Statements are statements but What is really available in India.

KF Special no. 1 shot, No 4 Shot
Shot 1 also in plastic shell with hindi printing.

No. 6 and 7 available at NRAI only.

KF Astram - No. 1 shot only.

KF Astram Magna, 34 gram, No. 1 shot only in plastic shell.

SHAKTIMAN

Various slugs

Hollow Point Slug
Rotex Slug
Rifled Slug
4.8 mm BB 32 gram shots

For further information - THe Buckshot Ctegory.

Americans classify their Buchshots as OOB, OB, No 1 to No 4 Buck but we follow the English standard.

Here our Buckshots are broadly classified as ;

SHOT SIZE PELLETS / Oz

LG 6
SG 9
Special SG 12
SSG 16
SSSG 20 ( Not in production now )

Large shots, not really for Buck hunting but more like Geese or similar game.

AAA 35

BB 70

Other sizes are there but not in production, mostly in between sizes.

AAAA
AA
A
BBBB
BBB
B

SSSG
MG

No. 4 1/2
No. 5 1/2
No. 6 1/2

These shots are in between sizes that are in uncommon use now.

Pellets to the shot.

What are we shooting. Based on common cartridges in use lets see what are we shooting.

KF Special 65 mm paper shell. 30 g ( 1 1/16 Oz ) shot load, 6 mm base cap, 33 grains powder, 3 dram Eq. charge.

No. 1 - 104
No. 4 - 181
No. 6- 287
No. 7- 361

I am sure stocks of 2,3,5 or 8 and the erstwhile 9,10,11 12 or dust do not survive now. Neither are they available anywhere.

WHat do we shoot on the range ?

Compak, RWS, Rottweil, Express or similar.

24 gram loads, or 7/8 Oz shot load, 70 mm plastic shell cartridge, 12 mm o r 16 mm base cap, crimp sealed, 2 3/4 Dram charge, power piston shot cup, 25 grains of a very modern powder.

No. 7 1/2 - 352 pellets

N0. 9 - 492 pellets

as the topic has ended as a new comer to forum but 57yrs of age.you see the no of settings ina shell depends on the size of the pellets as simple as that .earlier during the british they had magnum sizes of cartridges i think upto four inches in length.rest u can ask the mods. there were self manufactured ones which they still do one of cousin who is a die hard shikari always does that.truly speaking i have just heard the talk. they quite infamous in thier area which iwill not mention two of my cousins blasted away a group of imposing as terrorists in the middle of the night with thier 12 bore self made shot shelle ment for wild boars.they do have those good semiautos of browning make.
